Overview

TORNADO-3x/54x/6x/P6x/P3x PC plug-in DSP Systems and TORNADO-E stand-alone DSP Controllers feature the on-board serial I/O expansion (SIOX) I/F site(s), which allow installation of low-cost application specific AD/DA/DIO and DSP Coprocessor SIOX daughter-card modules (DCM) in order to meet a variety of customer applications.

TORNADO PC plug-in DSP Systems have two sites for SIOX DCM, whereas TORNADO-E stand-alone DSP Controllers feature only one SIOX site.

SIOX DCM install to the rear side of TORNADO mainboard and have two on-module connectors. The first SIOX I/F connector plugs into the corresponding TORNADO on-board SIOX I/F header, whereas the second connector is used for external analog & digital I/O signals.

SIOX rev.B and rev.C specifications

SIOX sites and SIOX DCMs are available as SIOX rev.B and SIOX rev.C specifications.  SIOX rev.C is the most recent superset over SIOX rev.B and includes optional parallel I/F. Connector types and DCM form-factors are different for SIOX rev.B and SIOX rev.C.

SIOX rev.B (also referenced as 'SIOX' without any revision specification) is used for all TORNADO-3x/54x/6x PC plug-in DSP Systems for ISA-bus host PC, TORNADO-P3x/P6x PC plug-in DSP Systems for PCI-bus host PC, and TORNADO-E stand-alone DSP Controllers.

SIOX rev.C is the latest design and features optional parallel data bus, smaller form-factor and different type of SIOX site connector. SIOX rev.C is used for TORNADO-P3x/P6x PC plug-in DSP Systems for PCI-bus host PC and latest revisions of TORNADO-E stand-alone DSP Controllers. SIOX rev.C allows installation of two SIOX rev.C DCMs onto TORNADO-P DSP System for PCI-bus PC, which features smaller height than that for regular TORNADO DSP Systems for ISA-bus PC.

The SIOX rev.C to SIOX rev.B converter/adapter board is available, which allows installation of two SIOX rev.B DCMs and their connection to source SIOX rev.C connectors.

SIOX rev.B I/F signals

SIOX rev.B I/F assumes serial communication between the on-board TMS320C3x/C54x/C6x DSP and SIOX rev.B DCM using the DSP on-chip SIO ports, and comprises of the following signals:

Tx/Rx frame/clock/data signals for DSP on-chip SIO ports
interrupt requests for DSP
timers and/or I/O signals from DSP and/or on-board IOX controller
reset signal for DSP
+5v, -5v, +12v, -12v power supplies

All SIOX rev.B signals are TTL/CMOS compatible (TORNADO-54x/6x/33/P3x/P6x/E33/E6x/E54x boards also provide 3v/5v logic levels compatibility). SIOX I/F allows communication at maximum CLKX/CLKR clock frequency for DSP on-chip SIO ports. This is maximum 15MHz for TMS320C31/C32 DSP, 37MHx for TMS320VC33 DSP, 50MHz for TMS320C54x DSP and 100MHz for TMS320C6x DSP.

SIOX rev.C I/F signals

SIOX rev.C I/F is a superset over SIOX rev.B I/F. It assumes serial and parallel data communication between the on-board TMS320C3x/C54x/C6x DSP and SIOX rev.C DCM using the DSP on-chip SIO ports and DSP parallel bus, and comprises of the following signals:

Tx/Rx frame/clock/data signals for DSP on-chip SIO ports
interrupt requests for DSP
timers and/or I/O signals from DSP and/or on-board IOX controller
8-bit parallel data bus, 6-bit address bus and data strobes
reset signal for DSP
+5v, +12v, -12v power supplies

SIOX rev.C I/F is designed for compatible application specific AD/DA/IO coprocessor DCMs, which include on-board DSP with the HPI-port (typically C54x and C6x DSPs) for local signal processing.

All SIOX rev.B signals are 3v/5v logic compatible. SIOX rev.C I/F allows serial communication at maximum CLKX/CLKR clock frequency for DSP on-chip SIO ports. This is maximum 15MHz for TMS320C31/C32 DSP, 37MHx for TMS320VC33 DSP, 50MHz for TMS320C54x DSP and 100MHz for TMS320C6x DSP. Maximum communication speed over parallel bus for SIOX rev.C I/F is about 30 Mbyte/s.

SIOX-Bus Architecture

Normally, SIOX DCM are designed to grab all resources of DSP on-chip SIO port, i.e. do not allow communication of other SIOX DCM(s) with the same DSP on-chip SIO port. This means that only one SIOX DCM should communicate with every DSP on-chip serial port.  Such approach simplifies design of SIOX DCM and is also used when the sampling frequency per one AD/DA/IO channel is high enough.

However, when the sampling frequency per one AD/DA/IO channel is low enough, and many channels are required, the above approach will not deliver efficient usage of high-speed DSP on-chip SIO port and might result in requirement for multiple slow-speed SIO ports. This covers a wide range of applications, including industrial control, instrumentation, biomedical, etc. The solution is the SIOX-Bus architecture, which allows multiple SIOX-Bus DCMs to connect to one DSP on-chip SIO port.

SIOX-Bus architecture assumes individual addressing for every SIOX-Bus DCM and allows parallel connection of up to eight SIOX-Bus DCMs to one DSP on-chip SIO port. A variety of SIOX-Bus modules includes a selection of AD/DA/DIO DCMs. In order to extend the SIOX I/F site beyond the TORNADO mainboard, the SIOX Extenders are used.
